well i figured it out. i went up to the store and got out and looked and there was a wire hanging under the truck... almost touching the ground. the plug just came unplugged from the tranny.
I posted the same question on this forum, but couldn't find it just now. Search for "backup light" or "backup lights". I wound up answering my own question with photographs that show where the switch is on the transmission that drives the backup lights. If you can't find it, email me and I will send you pictures.
Glad you figured it out. For future readers I will say that this post: "How to Wire Manual Backup Light Switch" posted 11/2#/06, shows a picture of where those wires that were hanging down plug in to the transmission.
A while back my reverse lights would come on part of the time. The problem was that the female end wasn't gripping the male pins tight enough to make contact all the time.Take a pair of pliers and lightly squeeze the female end so that the receptacles are slightly egg shaped. This should cure your problem.Mine never fell off the side of the tranny,so yours must be sloppy loose.
