Having just finished doing my own transmission I can say that a trained eye is not really needed you just need to make sure that you have paitients.

As far as evaluating the hard parts for excessive wear the copper bushings/bearings are easy when the copper is gone then it's bad but those will all be included with a good rebuild kit. for the drums and real reusable hard parts general mechanics knowledge is good, there are some wavy spring units in there so that's normal but otherwise it's all how straight its it and are there any gashes and gouges which will be painfully obvious when you see them if they are there.

I don't know that I need anything too crazy. The truck hardly tows any more than 10k and rarely gets hammered on except for the occasional on-ramp.

I ordered my pieces from Bill @ RacerX and got new bearings, think cam bearings except larger & smaller. While many looked almost new to me (I've rebuilt engines before so I have background on what worn bearings look like, not to mention I had new ones right there) there were some others that had notable wear and scoring in them but no wear on the shaft that rides in them. So they were replaced.

I'll say that in my searching I evaluated the kits from Suncoast, Factory Tech and RacerX and the idea of compiling what I needed from bulkpart.com. After having emailing all and calling and talking to Suncoast & RacerX I made my decision. The others don't have bad products by any means just the level of customer service was excellent and the phone and email help when I was actually doing the work was great.
