Having just finished doing my own transmission I can say that a trained eye is not really needed you just need to make sure that you have paitients.
As far as evaluating the hard parts for excessive wear the copper bushings/bearings are easy when the copper is gone then it's bad but those will all be included with a good rebuild kit. for the drums and real reusable hard parts general mechanics knowledge is good, there are some wavy spring units in there so that's normal but otherwise it's all how straight its it and are there any gashes and gouges which will be painfully obvious when you see them if they are there.
