what will happen if you mount a turbo air filter straight to the turbo like i seen done on gas engine cars

You still need a MAF to measure the volume of air entering the engine.

I would think you would suck nothing but hot air into the turbo when you want cool air.

Makes sense... it would be a lot of really hot air there getting sucked in. If anything you could maybe run a larger intake tube but it's pretty big already, not sure if it would make any increase in flow.

You guys have any recommendations on the BEST sounding/performing air intake setup for the 7.3L ?

Well with the tymar style intake With my measurements it got a whole 10 degrees hotter then outside temps...

I recomend the DIY tymar still intake check the wiki articles.
