Well, the old beaver I jumped out of had no door, and buckshot holes in the side. I was not strapped in in anway, not strapped to my tandem instructor either, and got the spot right by the door. As I searched for at least something to hang onto, they pointed out that I should not grap any of the fuel hoses or electrical wires that ran along the wall and ceiling.

Free falling 160 mph for 45 seconds, then floating down for five more was pretty fun. Unreal experience. Got a deal for any of you, you fly and I'll jump, ok?

As a former zoomie and student pilot, I have an aversion to jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Although an Army grunt did point out that the Air Force buys all of their aircraft from the lowest bidder!

Anyone read the story of the woman whose chutes were sabotaged by a romantic rival for her boyfriend's affections? The fall did not kill her. But it was the sudden stop that did her in. The saboteur even jumped along with the victim and the boyfriend to make sure the deed was done. It happened in Belgium earlier this week.

I would have pointed out that the B-52 was built by the "lowest bidder" too. The last one came out of the factory in Nov 1962. The remaining approx 95 B-52H's are expected to continue in service until around 2040, at which point they will be almost 80 years old!!!! On top of that, the B-52 has a better combat mission reliability rate than either of the newer B-1 or B-2 "Stealth" bombers. It's damned hard to find anything to critisize about that kind of record.

There are pilots now flying the same B-52's that were flown by their fathers and grandfathers. Truely mindboggling!!:thumbs
