you're looking for a clip on (field strength) amp probe.

That GreenLee above shoud do the trick according to the product description. Walk around the store with it and test it out before you buy it :D

There is nothing that pisses me off more than christmas lights except chevy.
I just get new lights every year and throw out the old even if they were working. This year I upgraded to LED lights. They are very bright and I can hook more on a string than the incandescent type. I will give these lights a chance for a couple of years cause they cost more.

Let us know what you end up with Crumm. Something like that would be handy, especially at Christmas time.

Well I purchased the GreenLee one and while it does work as advertised it does not work in this application. The wires to the bulbs are still hot even though the bulb string will not light up :dunno Somewhere in the string there is a bad bulb connection(or seven)and my patience wore too thin. The lawn ornament Christmas trees are now in the dumpster-mad

I have fought those type of lights and my hair is getting too thin for any more. I now do the dumpster thing and buy new.

thats kinda what i thought...personally ive DUMPED all these
type of lights and gone w/ the ones that stay lit even if ONE bulb
burns out...then its EASY to identify the dead bulb...

i know it can be expensive but when you factor in the frustration
& time troubleshooting these f'in things its worth it.

That sucks!!
I went the lazy way. I'm not putting any lights up, this year. Since we are going to put the house on the market after the New Year, I didn't want mess with climbing on the roof and possibly damaging the roof, gutters, myself, etc. ;)
