99f350 super, trouble, going in and out of overdrive

help!!!! i think i have a few problems and not sure where to start, #1,,truck is shifting in and out of od, loss of power, idle up is not working any more, have a code po 470exh back pressure malfunction, code sae 475 ex pressure , code 478 ex back pressure control valve high, i read a few other posts and did a few things to see if the truck ran any better and stopped shifting out of od, i unplugged the ebp sensor and it ran alittle better but still have the issue with the trans any ideas where to start?

souds like your EBP tube might be plugged and/or the sensor is bad.

As far as the tranny goes, how does the fluid look? When is the last time it has been flushed?

I do remember, when I was researching the EBPV mod, I read a long/detailed article...that if you do not do it right...it can screw up the transmission electronics. Something along the lines of that anyways :dunno

So sounds like you have a short or loose connection somewhere...possibly. Or maybe stuck EBPV....is that possible??

Don't remember if it was that article...or another, but I did read that if the EBPV is engaged...it only take 72 or 75 psi to un-seat an exhaust valve into an oncoming piston. Hopefully the transmission is just getting bad reading and that doesn't happen.

what happens when you disable the O/D switch on the stalk?

unless the EBPV mod was done by the original poster, it really does not apply. in its stock configuration, the valve has NOTHING to do with the trans.

if its stuck closed, it will make the truck sound like a jet. chances are the sensor tube is clogged.

i suspect that you have 2 DIFFERENT issues going on- one that is trans realated and the other is clogged tube related.

first off thanks for the replies, you guys have been great to me over the last year and a half:clap:

all the aftermarket add ons to this truck were done right off the showroom floor, nothing had=s been added since new and no issues till this month except for the idle up not working that happened at the end of winter. here is what i have done and have had done so far, i had the trans flushed and installed some type of expensive aftermartket fluid, this was done at the same time i had a new torque converter installed because it developed a hair line crack and was leaking. this was done about 10,000 miles ago. i thought is was the trans also, so up to ernies transmission to have it checked, he is the one that did the TC and fluid change. he was quite sure it was not the trans failing he thinks it,s due to a restricion in the engine causing it to downshift, he also checked for codes and these came up 470,475,478, all relating to the exh bp valve and sensor. he told me to check the tube and sensor, these were checked and were fine, no restricion and barley dirty, i had installed a new tube about a year ago. ,,next i read that if i unhook the ebp sensor by the hpop it may tell me if that is the problem,,,did that ,,,truck runs aliite better but still has the shifting issue,,,the part that really confuses me is it not consistent, i drove roughly 160 mile last wednesday back and forth from new york probrably 60 miles each way, i figured, if it was the trans it would do it consistently on the hills, some are 3-5 miles long and steep!! it did it once on the smallest hill because i dropped down around 45-50 mph (stuck behind two big rigs) that is the only speed that it happens. never below or above that speed....i have the new EBP sensor that i will install in the morning,,,but for some reason i do not think its going to fix it. also i have read that if you have a exhaust brake then the ebpv is supposed to be eliminated,,,is that correct?
the only time my truck sounds like a jet is when i start it and turn the exh brake on. i usually do that in the winter to heat the truck up quicker, i have not unhooked the od switch, i was told by the trans guy that the od light would flash if it was a internal transmission issue ,i will check back in the afternoon , thanks again for the insight, allan

one more question, should the idle up work at all temps or just when its cold to build heat, i remember it working when it was cold, but now it never idles up after starting.

the EBPV closes when its cold out at a certain temp. iirc, it senses the oil temp differential at the hpop or something like that.

umm, are you still running the stock tranny? differing opinions on running syn fluid in OEM trannys- the OEM clutch packs don;t always like the additives in wiz-bang tranny fluid. rebuilt trannies is another story.

well, that would be airflow, both in and out. check your airfilter, IC piping, turbo clamps while you are in there.

umm, explain please. do you have an aftermarket exhaust brake? are you sure its not malfunctioning? did you wire up the EBPV mod? do you have any other hard wired TC lockup converter circuit?

btw: do you have a chip on this thing?

it has a western exh brake, banks big head waste gate, banks exh,chips are- diablo (highway and everyday driving) and western (plowing my drive way and towing enclosed trailer) there is a box mtd under the cab for the trans brake, i did not do the ebpv mode i had another shop do it, all the add ons were done at the same shop at the same time 11 years ago. i am also thinking one of those items may be an issue,thats partly why im confused on where to start. if i change chips the o-d problem gets worse, it works the best with the western towing chip in.
