Anyone ever heard of somebody swapping a 5 or 6 speed manual in place of an automatic? Wondering what wiring probs or computer issues I would have? The mechanicals of it wont be the problem... Just wondering if anyone has heard or know someone that has done it, Or better yet know of anyone that has an older body style 4x4 5 speed that wants an auto?????

Thanks

Rick

It has been done, but I don't remember who did it. It does get pretty complicated. but it is possible.

I think on the puter side of it you have to get a PCM programmed for a manny tranny. Its definetly do-able though.

I saw posts about the reverse so cant imagine why this wouldnt work. I think I saw it on that unmentionable "other" site.

If you could get a 6-spd under an OBS truck, I'd probably still be driving my OBS, but I was told by my friend the Ford Mechanic that a 6-spd would not fit under an OBS floorpan. Of course, your truck looks like it may have a body lift. If so, problem solved.

The 6 spd doesnt gain you anything on the tall end right? Just gives a better crawler gear?

Well, it is sort of subjective in that sense. The way I understand it, 1st through OD on the ZF-6 and ZF-6 are the same ratios, but the ZF-6 has a granny, also. What that allows you to do is have a numerically lower rear-end ratio, so you end up getting a net top-end gain out of the ZF-6. You use 1st for what it was meant for, which is first. In my ZF-5, I used 2nd for first, since the 1st gear was a crawler granny with the 4.11 gears. At 70 MPH, I was turning 2600 RPM in my 95. At 70, I turn 2000 with my 99. I get MUCh better fuel economy at 75 mph, too.

The ZF-6 crawler and the ZF-5 crawler gears are about the same, because the rear end ratios made them so (the 95 had a 4.11, the 99 has a 3.83), which means that my ZF-6, all things considered, has a much higher final gear ratio. So, the ZF-6 nets you top end, not bottom end, but it does it by allowing you to have higher rear-end gears. Clear as mud? Sorry, I am a little muddled today...

Ahhh, so by doing the 6 spd swap you also need to do a gear set swap (front and back in 4x4) to see a net gain. Hmmmmmm, one would have to really haul in the MPG's to offset that.

But this is probably side bar to what slickrick is after, if you take a gander at the height of his tires I'm guessing he is looking for lower gearing?

Yep he has a ring and pinion waiting for install. He said its pretty bad right now from 0-40mph. He never see's OD on the highway, or was that he has to keep it locked into 3rd, oh well I'll let him answer.
