I had a 2005 f-250 6.0 Auto 5 speed

I blew the heads at 85000 miles ford redid them, I blew the heads at 135000ford would not redo them & in Arkansas the cheapest place to get the job done was about $4500.00 plus I still had a payment on it, at 85000 miles i had Airraid intake & banks 6 gun on it.
At 135000 I had a ppe programer, Airraid, & an intake small mouth by CFM pulling 15000# camper in Loisiana pretty flat done there.
So i've gone back to 2000 7.3 it is more reliable & way easier to work on.

ok the goal is a street truck with get up and go. I'll say that the 7.3 is not going to have the punch of a big block gasser or one of the newer diesels with variable turbos. But that said with proper fueling, turbo selection, and tuning you'll only have a slight hesitation when you nail it from an idle while the turbo spins up.

The very first thing to have your mechanic do is a compression and leak down test on your cylinders. this will help assess the current condition of the engine and possibly identify any great problems in your engine before you start tearing into it.

Headstuds with an OE headgasket will help keep you from blowing HG's with a bigger turbo.

Heads on the 7.3 generally do not require any porting, polishing or other fancy work. The extent of work required to a 7.3 head is usually just upgrading the valve springs to a bit stiffer springs & replacing the valve stem seals would be recommended. valve jobs, decking, & injector cups are generally not required. a competent head shop or machinist will be able to tell you what is really needed.

As you already know you will need forged rods. I suggested the compression test to give you an idea of cylinder wear so you can be ready to buy oversized pistions & machine work if needed, and possibly a new block if compression is really low but you should see the smoke screen if this is the case.

Injectors. stage 2 or 3 injectors will get you the fuel you need. most sd trucks going for power will step to the single shot injectors from the OBS to give them less hp oil demands but an aftermarket hp oil pump would be recommended. You may also want to consider hybrid injectors.

I would highly recommend you find some other psd owners near you or even take a trip and arrange to drive some modified trucks to see what kind of power they have by the seat of the pants with what mods.

In texas the closest well reputed trans shop is BTS in lead hill AR. Platinum has had good luck with the trans he got from DI.

DO NOT GET A BLOCK FROM DAVID AT DI...

Unless you know for FACT HE is building it...

I have one of his "short" blocks... Good thing he sells it with no core because 40k later I am having to build my core to replace my short block less then a year later. He voided my warranty on the motor.

Water injection...

Which would have been fine if I had not had issues with the motor from day one... He kept telling me its just breaking in, its normal, its a built motor... anything but there might be an issue with it...

Then after I got the Compression test done he Voided it...
