As many of you know, my 2001 7.3 F250 4x4 transmission is on its last leg. It stalled in reverse the other night (I would assume either TC clutch or low line pressure), and just last night started the fast switching between 3rd and 4th back and forth upon acceleration. I've been quoted 2500 to rebuild it, but I'm a cheap SOB and don't want to spend that if I can avoid it. Yes, it would have a warranty, and yes I wouldn't be the one to have to fool with it. But my question is, would it be near impossible for me to do my own rebuild? I have a lot of mechanical experience, but aside from normal tranny services, I'm not very well versed with them, especially the 4r100. I have the required lifts and tools to do it, but if there's anything too precision related I might just be best to pay the 2500. Any advice is appreciated

A proper build on a 4r100 involves more than swapping out worn parts. There are case and valve upgrades that involve machineing, not to even mention proper case cleaning that involves much more sophisticated equipment than most people have acsess to.A case holding fixture that would be attached to your bench or an engine stand that allows rotation of the case for assembly operations.Swapping it in/out of the truck is one thing, building it is a totally different thing!

I appreciate the response. Didn't realize there's so much involved. I was quoted 1700 to rebuild it with a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty. Is that fair?

For $1700 you cant be getting much more than a parts change out,no upgrades, just a changeout of visibly worn parts. What kind of converter will you be getting? The labor to R&R it has to be $400,a new chinese converter $500,so that leaves $800 to completely disassenble, clean check reassemble and supply the reqd new parts.

edit) while the trans is out,it would be a good idea to check and probably replace the up pipes and donuts. The studs are probably all rusted off and will need to be drilled and retapped and that cant be done with the trans in.dont even ask me how I know.

I spent 1500 rebuilding it myself. I used RacerX for the converter and parts, and just followed the ATSG manual. It was bad ass when finished.

If you can rebuild a motor, then you can rebuild a tranny. No difference at all. If you get stuck, there are guys on the forum to offer advice. I had to make a couple tools using flat iron, angle iron, and threaded rod. Otherwise, just make sure you have a legit pair of snap ring pliers and a really clean space to work and lay everything out.
