Believe it or not the PCM is programmed to develop a "rough running" condition when the fuel level drops dangerously low, and yes it is intended to make the driver check the gauges and hopefully see the truck is dangerousely low on fuel. It is actually outlined in the Powerstroke Diesel Engine Manual that was provided with the Owner's Manual for my truck. I actually ran the tank low once to try it and while it didn't run as bad as Mike's truck it definitely had a "lope" to the idle that went away after refilling the truck.

I meant to pull my diesel engine manual and read up on it, but I have been so swamped with yard duties (trying to get things in shape as my oldest boy graduates this weekend and we are going to have a house full... hence pulling some shrubs and landscaping duties) that I havent gotten to it yet.
