Why are they switching to the Challengers? On the North Slope they used Challengers for years but started switching over to the Case/IH type back in 2000. The Challengers do much more damage to the tundra when the snow gets thin. No worry of damaging the environment down there?

From my understandind is that last year they WANTED Challengers, we have an all CAT fleet so getting more Cats with Cat engines just makes sence. Getting a Case with a Cummins that we have no support for, would just make things difficult.

They went to Cat, but wanted some changes to be made, Cat has gotten so big that it doesnt want to help out so they went with Case. I guess they got what they wanted and bought the MT865Bs. The MT800 series tractor can pull more, flat out... it is breaking records (look on the link in my first picture for more info).

The ice is too thick for them to be worried about that kind of damage, hell they drive D8Rs and our D9N around out there on the fozen ice all the time.

Does it get THIN down there? lol

On the transition it does, that is where the Island that we are on meets the sea ice. The black/brown/redish dirt obsorbs more sunlight melting the ice. Once you get out about 100 feet it is fine. Even this problem is only a concern for about a month, then it gets cold again.

from the air, that place looks tiny.

yeah, everyone likes those 4x4 vans until they have to work on them! I don;t want to hijack, but trust me, it can be 'fun'.
