hi there, I have a 2001 250 with 270,000 on it. The truck runs great it when shifting into 3 n 4 italmost seems like it shifts too soon. Whether that's the case or not, it has an awful vibration and lugging problem that goes away with speed. Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks

I believe they all do that. Mine shifts pretty soon. If you really go slow mine will shift into overdrive at around 38 mph. I have a ritual when I first start up my truck, I turn off my Overdrive everytime. Then turn it on when Im goin faster than 45mph. Just a habit of mine. There is a mod you can do that instead of havin the Overdrive on when the truck starts to having it in the off position then you have to turn it on when needed. If you do some searching you can find this mod. Its easy enough for me to just turn it off when I first start the truck.

are you sure it's the 3-4 shift or is it the converter locking?

the converter locking and bringing down the rpms notably to lug the engine can be indicative of a worn converter that's loosing efficiency

Yea counting the "lockup" of the converter almost makes it feel like its a 5speed to me. Seems to have that extra shift point.

stock trans at 270,000 you did pretty good.
most of us have dead ones at around 150k, and you darn near doubled that..

the trans is electronically shifted, but, it also measures line pressure, computes a throttle pressure vs rpm, etc to determine shift point..

if you have access to a scan tool, you can have the adaptives wiped and start over, but I'm thinking that will be a very short time "cold pill"

If you want a good built transmission that if properly cooled (factory is inadequate) will last much longer than your stocker then visit any of the following

Brian's truck shop
Racer X
John Woods
Suncoast
Factory Tech MonsterBox

BTS has the longest reputation for the best E4OD/4R100 with the PSD crowd Suncoast has an excellent reputation in the cummins crowds and offers many billet custom pieces that are not needed except for highly modified trucks.
