I'm sure this question has been posted in some way or another before but I just had to ask. I'm considering 4 different oils for my 06 f-350 powerstroke. Looking at Rotella 5w-40 synthetic ($66.00 per change), Mobil 1 Light Duty Diesel synthetic ($88.00 per change), Royal Purple Synthetic 15w-40 ($110.00 per change), or Amsoil 15w-40 synthetic ($110.00 per change). Plan on keeping the normal oil change intervals just because of the warrenty and my conversations with the diesel mechanic about the problems that seem to arise with people trying to extend their oil change intervals. Is it worth the extra money for the more expensive oils even though I'm keeping regular change intervals. The EGR valve (soot buildup) and the injectors are my big concern.

I have been running Rotella Syn since I had 15,000 miles on my rig. I have over 80,000 miles now without any problems with the oil. I started Syn oil due to the romps at cold start. No more romps now. I don't think the more expensive syn oils are any better if you are going to stick with the recommended oil change intervals.

Wonder if there would be any advantage using Mobile 1 over the Rotella synthetic. They are the same viscosity. The Rotella seems to be easier to find and less expensive to purchase. I wonder if there would be a significant fuel mileage increase or difference between the 15w-40 viscosities and the 5w-40 viscosities.

Rotella 5w-40 syn in mine. Change it about every 5-6k. Makes it start/run easier when cold compared to 15w-40.

You guys running Rotella synthetic, how have your EGR valves performed? Did you see some improvement in your milage. Saw about 2-3 mph improvement in my wife's Toyota 4runner when I swithched from a synthetic blend to a full synthetic (Royal Purple).

Hey Flopster, your close to me in geography, no problems in that hot Charleston wheather with 5w-40. We've had about 65 days over 90 degrees this year and about 8 over 100. I'm sure your hot weather is similar if not worse. I know the couple of times I've been to Charleston it had to be the most humid place I've ever been.

I noticed about 1 1/2 mpg gain with the Rotella Syn oil. Heat does not seem to bother the syn oils, and that is a selling point.
