I have been looking at buying a 2001 f350 4x4 crew cab long box. The truck has 150,000 miles on it. It had a new 7.3l installed about 12,000 miles ago. What can I expect for things like fuel economy, maintenance issues or any other surprises? I have heard they have transmission problems. Is this something that will need to repair every X amount of miles, or is it a one time fix? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

A lot of the tranny problems occur when you boost up the engine power which is so tempting and easy to do. Get a larger tranny(or add another)cooler and a tranny temp gauge. Heat is one of the big killers. I switched to a cooler out of an 04. Made a huge difference.

Thanks for the input. The more I talk to people, the more I hear I should not have a problem. I did ask more questions. The owner did not modify the truck, and it is the original tranny. Everything works fine as far as I can tell. Now we need to agree on a price. I think 17,900. is high. He does not want to come down and I may need to look for another truck.

I have an '02 F350 4x4 CC that get 14mpg in town and 16mpg hwy. Driving over 2000 rpm's hwy drops the mileage significantly in my case.

What is your mph @ 1900-2000 rpm? Also, if you were given an option to purchase the truck I inquired about first or, spend the same amount of money and purchase an 01 supercab long box with leather and 123,000 miles in much better shape, which one would you purchase?

I run at about 65-70 mph at 2000 rpm. What area do you live in? There are many "lower" mileage super duties available in the DFW area. As long as the vehicle has been well maintained it should not be a problem. See if you can get a Ford dealer to run an Oasis report on the VIN to check the maintenance records and see if any major repairs have been done at a Ford house.

edit: I bought my '02 six months ago with 48K on the odometer. I have put 19K on it since then with only regular maintenance expenses.

I live in South Dakota. Truck prices here a nuts. Anything with a diesel sells for premium dollar. One dealer is asking 17,500 for a 99 f250 sc with 174,000 miles. The truck looks nice except for the color.
