hi im new here i have a 2000 f-450 7.3 that since i have gotten it,it has smoked bad on start up,getting worse, white smoke cloud you out, burn your eyes raw diesel smell.

i have tested and replaced alot, tube running to oil pan and sensor change was plugged, glow plug system checked,u.v.c. gaskets, and valve cover gaskets changed.

ford took my money twice said i needed injectors, not had them tested at diesel components service 4 were borderline but within so i replaced with remanned from them, same problem.

compression test 360 accross the boards 135,000 miles on it.

had oil changed = same but recently i have gotten a #4 injector not contributeing code,i swapped injectors, checked and replaced o rings, and coppers. same code # 4,still smokeing (the wrong color too white)

i also mentioned when it went to ford about all engine sensors, and electric accelerator values dropped to zero then went back up,ford didn't diagnois this i did.
myin cab idle up unplugged stopped this problem but still smokes, the 5 volt ref wasn't 5 volts when this was plugged in.

anyways with the equal compression readings I'm ruleing out the head gasket, checked the push rods anyways, ruleing out bent connecting rod too,and rings.

had at another shop for a D.O.T. he said he would check and fix it,told me he replaced 1 or 2 fuses that control injectors, but i checked for these fuses and looked on my shopkey don't exist still smoked, still payed him don't know why?

anywho has anyone had this elusive problem here before? I'm almost at wits end and it gets me pretty upset thinking about it. any help appreciated we did a fuel pressure test also. just happened to have a newer diesel a friend had for giggles and something to do swpped injector controller same problem.

it does miss on startup and notice some on road too. other then the smoke embarrasesment it is a great truck.

any thoughts to this on what to check be really appreciated

Welcome to the site Tom,

Sounds as if you have hit all the "What I would look at first" items, one other possible Fuel for thought, check the fuel line that enters the head, there is a fine screen that should be in place.... this is on both sides, if this screen is damaged, or missing this could indicate debri in the fuel line, this may cause the injector to mis fire hence giving you your fuel too late, or even possibly wet stacking the cylinder, as the fuel is not spraying, but dripping. next in line would be to yank the injector itself and check for debri and damage.

Check the EOT at cold startup & see how it compares to ambient air temp. You may also need a new GPR or at least test the old one. Unplug the EOT sensor & it will keep the GPR on for about 2 mins. Check the two large terminals to ground with a meter. they should read very close to the same , If not ,you may need a GPR..

thanks for the welcome and encouragement guys, also i will definetly check eot,and the screens.

working on stuff like this keeps me in it i guess like playing chess, and it will be great when the problem is solved

usually i dont get upset and keep plugging at it,but after the payment to ford twice and other shop it upsets me.

i just didnt have a break out box and have a otc genisys, and a snapon 2500 so a little limited,i have scope and a good dvom and as long as the phones not ringing ,and i'm not getting pulled away from it,it's fun.

other question or wonder i had was the cup injector sits in? but a guy at ford says only when your loseing coolant,is this true? i checked for fuel in valve cover and oil couldn't really tell a definite odor of raw diesel, and i would imagine if the seals leaking there due to wear i would notice that or a coolant leak.

if it comes to pulling the head or heads i don't mind i guess its just another job. just don't want to spend any extra dough if not needed.

well the machine shop i talked to said they have neverhad a 7.3 head in there, also i did check eot i did again, the raw diesel and miss after warm up i don't belive would be there? would it?

but hey i will check these things and get back to this page, she wants me to come home but i got an excuse now to look at my truck some more.:thumbs

From what I have read, If there is a problem with the injector cups, you will have fuel in the coolant bottle...
