I've always been curious. Do you get to change your hauling rates as the cost of fuel goes up? Or are you just expected to take the hit and make less?
I sub-contract to a large company and the fuel surcharge doesn't change much. Work I do on my own there's more room. The problem is that some firms have released fairly generic letters to the effect of "In an effort to remain competitive we have capped the fuel surcharge." Which is a nice way of saving we still get our share, the rest is up to you. I believe Landstar is in the middle of a class action lawsuit for cutting the fuel surcharge to the drivers, charging the customer more, and keeping the revenue. Heard about that on XM Open Road.
