A good 6 to 10 week course $1300 - $2500 And that includes the truck to take the test. Anybody that offers those 1 week classes stay away.

no way this will EVERY happen, when you consider a PRIVATE RV owner...
no way theyll EVER pay 1300-2500 for the course...and when you consider
the potential LOSS of state sales tax <if folks CANT buy these RV's> you
can BET your state politicals will do everything they can to make this
EASIER for folks to buy.

Do you have to be so NEGATIVE. Think about it this way most insurance companys will give you a discount for taking the course. It wont cover the full cost but it helps. Buy the way why would you NOT want somebody in a 40,000lb rocket on the highway to NOT be trained on how to use it. Would you want one of them parked on top of your family car with them in it or are there lives NOT worth the extra expence.

These folks are federally required to have a CDL

IMO any vehicle with air brakes, I don't care what it is commercial, recreational, or who knows, should be required to be operated by a CDL driver. I know there are idiot CDL drivers out there, but there are far more idiots behind the wheel of passenger vehicles, and when you give them the keys to a motor coach, bad things happen. The average driver has no clue about air brakes and how they work and for that reason they should not be driving a large vehicle with out a CDL.

Anyone who falls into the following catagories is federally (not state) required to have a CDL. The state that you live in may have additional requirements.

"There is a federal requirement that each state have minimum
standards for the licensing of commercial drivers. This
manual provides driver license testing information for drivers
who wish to have a commercial driver license (CDL). This
manual does NOT provide information on all the federal
state requirements needed before you can drive a commercial
motor vehicle (CMV). You may have to contact your
state driver licensing authority for additional information.
You must have a CDL to operate:
A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating
GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds.
A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds
the gross combination weight rating is more than
26,000 pounds.
A vehicle designed to transport more than 15 persons
including the driver.
Any size vehicle which requires hazardous materials
placards
Your state may have additional definitions of CMVs.)"

just cause i dont agree w/ you and look at the broader reaching
scope of what your saying doesnt mean im being negative.

the work COMMERCIAL is were the issue lies...private coach
private trailer gives room for interp. and opinion.

youve got trailer & coach mfg's that have a hand in this decision
theyre sales will impact the contribution to the politicals & the DROP
in sales tax (if someone has to pay 1300-2300 bucks for a license)
is enough to raise SERIOUS opposition

i want someone to be educated and instructed but even YOU
say the the courses vary...would you like to regulate those TOO !?!

Sweet rig in the pictures Tbar, do you know the owner or did you just see it and take pictures?

Comming from a prospective Med duty truck buyer there is no way i would invest 6-10 weeks of my time + a couple grand on a CDL and it would benefit me more then the average person because i am a heavy equipment mechanic and most places like the person to have a CDL anyway. So with that said i would have to agree with bushpilot.

And whats the big deal about air brakes?

If you can afford to pay 10,000 to 1 million for an RV you can afford to be properly trained to opperate it. Did you know that air brakes take atleast 1/2 second to engage that little time could be the difference between life and death. I dont want to go into it all here if you dont beleve me just pick up a copy of the CDL driver manuel from your DMV ( its free) and see for your self.
