I have an 06' F-350 w/6.0L Diesel that has clogged the fuel filter up with rust and wiped out multiple injectors. The truck is only 1.5 yrs old and has 19K miles, how does this happen? Where does the rust come from?

The dealer says it is not warranty because it is contaminated fuel from the gas station, but to think that much rust came from the fuel station everyone would be having the same problems that fill up there.

The truck does have an auxilary 100 gal aluminum tank in the bed too. Locking gas caps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of...........Welcome aboard!!!

Most likely algi which is not uncommon..........what you have to ask yourself is...........how did it get past the fuel filter to the injectors.

Give us more detail.....symptoms......what you had done......etc.

06 F 350SD Crew DRW 6.0L PSD, 19000 miles, 98 gal trnsfer flow aux tank in bed, poly 38 gal main tank. No syptoms.

Filled with 125 gal before leaving, drove 525 miles no problems with empty trailer (6000#). Loaded and pulling approx 12k# drove 150 miles when lost power. Check oil per local Ford dealer and was low 1 gal. (full when started) added oil and power came right back. Hit the highway, 30 miles later lost power again. Oil level is good. Unhook trailer and can drive highway speeds ut engine missing. Next Ford Dealer hooks up DDT and #5 injector non functional and #1 slacking. No trouble codes.

Dealer states there is so much rust in the fuel filter that it collapsed and some of the rust went through the injectors. In their opinion, the rust came from the gas station. Went to the gas station and they have had no other complaints and that I wasn't sucking the bottom of their tanks, etc.

Dealer wants to flush entire system multiple times, change all injectors, fuel filters and fuel pump. I asked fuel samples to be pulled from each tank and still waiting for a response on that.

Truck and trailer sits 375 miles from home and no one can answer where the rust came from.

Algi? Where does that come from and why?

Thanks again!

Diesel fuel has a tendency to absorb/collect water.

Algi grows in the presence of water. It can look very similar to rust......worst case it will even float in mats on the surface of the fuel. When you run the factory tank down low the pick up tube sucks the matted algi into the screen restricting flow and starving your engine of fuel. Stop and turn it off and enough can float free to allow you to drive again.

Algi will also grow on the walls of your fuel tank........when you pour in an algicide it kills the algi which turns loose and floats in the fuel.

This is why it is important to get fresh fuel from stations that turn their fuel regularly. Less chance of water and thus algi growth.

It will take an attorney and the backing of the dealership to get the fuel station to admit they are at fault. 9 times out of 10 it's the last fill before failures that's the cause. You had equipment failure do to their fuel and the courts will see it that way.

I would suggest going and getting a fuel sample from the pump that you initially filled up with....TAKE A WITNESS!

A lot of people got some bad diesel at Wal-Marts in South Texas last year. Seams the warm south has it more often.

Live and fueled in WI at reputable station. Transfer tank has a trnasfer pump and has been pretty much empty since March 07' then filled for this trip.

Is it possible that the Aux tank doesn't go completely empty and algi grew in fuel. Filled and algi floats? Then when tank started getting near empty it pumped that through to main and then the rest of the system and be mistaken for rust?

how long does fuel have to sit for algi to grow?
