I did some driving around town today in the 06. I noticed a couple things, first the factory temp guage hardly registered for the first 30-40 minutes. I had plenty of heat in the cab, just a low guage temp. Second was whenever I stopped for more than a couple minutes (even after the truck was running for more than 1 hour) it went into high idle. It wasn't that cold out about 25 most of the day.

Could the eliminated hood blanket have anything to do with this?

(before anyone says it, yes I understand the factory guage is just a safe operating range)

Thoughts anyone??? :dunno

The engine generates so much heat that I think the blanket is nothing and is not having an effect on your heat problem. I would take it back in to Ford and have them look.

It appears I had the same issue you are explaining not too long ago. I went to the dealer and asked to drive an identical truck and that truck also took forever to warm up. What I found worked for me is putting a screen front on it. Not a full winter front but the one with the slots in it. It made a world of difference. I now have heat coming from the vents alot sooner and it got up to operating tempature quicker, much quicker Last week we were at -25c/-13f and it warmed up just fine with that front on.

My truck came without a under hood pad from the factory. I think the main reason for the pad is to reduce noise. They must think that the new trucks are quiet enough without it.

I installed the underhood pad on my 05 EB X. It made a world of difference. Quieter inside and much quieter outside.

How much was the pad?

I've been thinking about adding a set of louvers like some of the older macks had on them.. it's cold it closes, it warms up, they open up...

The pad was about $120 dollars including the plastic push in clips.

It helps big time with the diesel noise during the cold mornings.

I ordered it from Ford. You must specify a 2003 Excursion as they stopped installing them in 2004.

BTW, I was not worried about the so-called paint bubbling on the hood after people had removed their hood liners. I wanted it for it's sound dampening effects!
