When In Doubt,THROTTLE ON
My gf's dad has an 04 F250 with a 6.0. They were pulling their enclosed trailer out to the Sturgis Rally and on the bigger hills, the truck lost power, kicked the engine light on and was dumping black smoke out of the exhaust (truck is bone stock). The truck would chug or hicup and blow the smoke when it did that. They brought it to a dealer out there and it came up with P0299 and P0405. According to them, these codes fell in line with TSB 06-23-02 so they then proceeded to pull the turbo and split it in half. They said the insides were covered in rust and they needed to replace it. So he got the turbo replaced under warranty. The turbo they replaced it with was part # 4c3z-6k682-cbrm. They also put new fuel filters and air filter in it. It drove good and had the power back. On their way back home today, everything was going good. Then after their second fill up, they noticed they lost over 3 mpg. Then the truck started acting up again. He said it does it the worst when the truck is just about ready to kickdown, but isn't to that point yet. The truck would hicup and blow smoke again. He said this time the smoke is worse and coal black. The truck acts the same as it did the first time it acted up, but it is worse this time around. Does sound like turbo problems again? Is that a part number of a new turbo or a remanufactured unit? He's calling his local dealer on Monday and wants it looked at again. Any help is appreciated.
