02 tranny ffluid question

i just got a v10 2002 auto 4wd, my owners manual says that interchanging mercon with mercon v is a no no... why? my manual says the truck calls for mercon but did not "mercon v" replace mercon? this is only for the tranny not transfer case etc.
please help?

V10..... Didnt know there was a V10 power stroke... Are you sure you are

ford originally released a Mercon V that was incompatible with the transmissions designed for Mercon/Dextron III (e4OD & 4R100) it has since been reformulated such that the only spec available now is Mercon V of the formulation that is compatible with the older Mercon specifications.

Mecon V will work fine. Don't forget the transfer case when you change the fluid.
