Hey guys, i'm a new member and I need help.
I have an 02 F-350 with 73,000 miles on it. Last week I was stranded and ended with my local Ford dealer replacing the CPS. All was well for a few days until Friday a.m. when the truck started hard and ran erradically for approx 10 minutes and quit. I towed it into my heated shop and let it sit overnight (It's approx 20 deg. outside) The truck still didn't want to start properly however, it does start after extended cranking. (Approx. twice the amount of time normally required to start it up) After it starts it seems to idle properly and doesn't smoke more than normal but when it's shut off it starts again the same way. Could it be something in the glow plugs or controller? How can I check the glow plugs and controller? Or could it be something the ford dealer didn't plug in properly etc.? Any help would be greatly appreciated so I don't have to load up this 4X4 Supercrew dually on my car trailer and tow it to the garage. (Question: What do you tow the biggest truck you have with?)

I'm going to move this thread into the 99+ SD sections since it seems that you do have a start condition but possibly an underlying issue that we can diagnose in the other forum.

Are your batteries original since 02? If so, they could well be the culprit. Glow plugs most likely arnet the issue, if you get it started then shut it off, it should fire right back up as your combustion chambers are probably warm enough to light #2 off. Im thinking you are having a fuel delivery issue... once again, batts.

Might as well cover the basics also, fuel tank level? When was the fuel filter changed last? Water in fuel/drain the fuel filter cannister? Last oil change? Any recent maintainence done just prior to problem appearing?

Just my 2 centavos.

Great ideas, there are new batteries and plenty of cranking power, plenty of fuel in the tank, I was thinking it might be fuel so I am in the process of changing the filter. I don't know how to drain the canister. No other maintenance other than the cam sensor. Not sure of last oil change I just purchased this truck approx. 2 weeks ago.

I would change the oil and rule that out. The injectors on these trucks use oil to fire them.

Might see whatkind of fuel pressure it is at when it cranks and when it starts up and is running rough.

How do you check the fuel pressure on a diesel? Does it have a schrader valve?

yeah if you look on the field pressure regulator there should be a valve that looks like a valve stem for a tire that is the place to check

If it starts after extended cranking, but doesn't smoke more than normal I would look towards the HPOP. It sounds like it is taking longer than normal to build oil pressure. This can be checked with a scan tool looking at the ICP data or with a mechanical gauge. It needs to build pressure quickly to be able to start properly.

i have seen this before if the truck has high miles or around 100k you should go to advanced auto parts and get seafoam engine oil cleaner and run the truck for 20 minutes or so till warm and change the oil. use agood oil filter ( not fram) wix filter or fleet and good oil rotella or chevron . take the truck for a drive if it don't run better then you want to maybe looking into the possiblity of cracked o-rings on the injector . hope this helps
