I have a 02 7.3 that I bought new and now has 506k miles on it. The engine is stock with the eception of a K&N air filter. Two weeks ago I tried to start the truck. It would crank up and run for about 2 seconds before it started sounding like the engine was starving for fuel. It was a hard knocking sound. I had it towed to a dealer and they said it was the wiring harness that was under the valve cover on the passenger side. This harness was replaced at 30k miles because it was hard to start in cold weather. This morning it happened again. This time I was told that it was the injector control module. I got about 200 miles down the road and I felt it do it again and the engine light came on. It stayed on for a few seconds and then things went back to normal.
Has anyone else had a problem like this? Where is the ICM located? The mechanic said that they can get water in them which makes sense since it was raining today but it ran fine when I turned it off last night and it happened when I tried to start first thing this morning. So needless to say, I'm confused and $2000 poorer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

are you sure you dont mean the IDM ?

sounds to me like they didnt fix it, but w/out
a code reader these things are pretty tough
even to BEGIN trouble shooting.

There are companies out there that sell
used (referbished) computers they even offer
a warranty (which is more than MOST dealers
will admit to)

take a look at these and compare what your dealer
just charged you...Auto Computer Exchange

You are correct. It was the IDM. I'm not much on these acronyms.

I was hoping that they put the code on the invoice but no such luck. I watched him check it but I didn't pay close attention. Seemed like it was C680 or a C6080.

I checked the web page and that sure is a difference in price. Now that I know what it looks like where is it located? I could atleast check the connector and harness.
Thanks.

Nope. I did have to replace the power steering pump and the fan clutch. The water pump and alternator are original. I'm hoping to get 700k out of it before a rebuild or replacement. I am not buying a new one. I'll buy a chevy before I buy a 6 litre. Ford seems to think that we want power. I want fuel economy. I have all the power I need. Fuel costs really cut into my profit margin.

I had a 96 PSD and it took a guard rail to stop it. It had 450k when that happened. It did go through 4 water pumps though.

Thanks for the reply, Dude. I just noticed you post. If I ever find out what it is I'll post it here. Now that I know where to look I want to check the harness.

if you have a drop in style k&n air filter, you might wanna trash that and stick with the stock one. The drop in style filters have been known so suck dirt. your other option would be to do the DIY (do it yourself) intake.

heres an article write up about how to do it.

JR,
Good point. What did you do with the air suction sensor that has two wires going to it? Hopefully my stock air hose hasn't dry rotted.

someone will chime in with exactly what to do, but i believe you can drill a small hole in the end of the filter and just work the sensor into that hole and still get an air tight seal.

When I had the 6637 filter I'd just tie the minder off to the side and out of the way, there's no detrimental effects having it tied off.
