Anyone know of a good source for instructions/specs on installing a wood stove? I checked with the insurance company and a woodstove would only increase fire insurance by $50 a year. Looking at my current heating oil bill I have to do something. I know where I can get a stove for free but need to make sure it is properly installed up to spec so that the insurance company will be happy. We have an extra double wall pipe out the roof right next to the furnace in the garage. Would just need to run pipe out living room wall and elbow up the pipe out the roof.

You might google the name of the manufacturer of your particular stove, I bet you could contact the manufacturer and get directions e-mailed directly to you in a .pdf format.

Hi Crumm,

Don't know about Alaska but down here, If the Tree & Lizard huggers had their way, we Cali folks could'nt even have Wood Stoves. Prolly a good idea to check for yer local codes & such. I understand that, now, they have to have a Catalytic Converter kinda thing on'm.

I installed my own. There aint that much to it

I'd bet, any Wood Stove vendor in your area would have "How Too" information and requirements.

As I said: it's the best darn thing I've done to my place.

It's a nice feeling, sit'n in a warm house, know'n you aint pay'n nobody a Rip Off price.... for the comfort. Just a little of yer own labor cut'n & split'n wood.

There is nothing like a wood fire to keep you warm. It is a different heat plus I love the sounds. I will lite mine when we get cold in about a month.

Up here the Tree huggers are too busy trying to save the tundra from the awful oil drillers to worry about wood stoves. In town they do have burn-bans when the ice fog sets in but I am outside the city limits so I am free to do as I please. By the way try and keep them bunny huggers down there if you could, we seem to be getting more and more of them everyday. Alaska is the last frontier and we would like to keep it that way. When the day comes that they tell a guy he can't heat with wood it will be a sad day in history. We live in a smoke cloud all summer from the thousands of acres of forest fires every summer so what is wrong with a little puff out of a wood stove in the winter...
