Hey,

Got a few questions for you guys that plow. I have seen that it is not recommended by ford that my short box super cab be used as a plow. I know many guys do but is there anything that will help ease the strain? What type of springs does a diesel 04 F250 come with? Is there any point in putting in the "x" springs I hear people talking about. The plow I'm putting on weights 613 lbs.

My next question is in regards to power supply. So far I will have the plow, 1 dual halogen rotator beacon, and some serious backup lights (4 55 w/halogens) and a tailgate spreader. Will the truck be able to handle this stock? How do I calculate my available usage?

Thanks for the input!

Cheers
Jeff

You need to total up the watts and divide by 12 to find the amps. That should tell you if you have enough alternator for the job. Anything over 100 amps and you will need a bigger alternator or a second alternator.

i run a 8ft western on my truck and frontend only drops about 1 inch...i don`t think you will have a problem using your truck for plowing, just don`t be a ram-rod with it and you will be fine....i have installed a few plows on same truck as yours and they have had no problems....as far as your stock charging system, i think you should be alright....not too often are you going to be running the plow and spreader at the same time. as for the aux. back-up lights, i think 2 lights would be enough, but that is my opinion....also i have serviced a few trucks that have had a plow and a spreader and they had no problems with the stock charging system keeping up....hope this helps....

what kind of plow you using?

I also run an 8' Western on my truck. You shouldn't have any problems at all. I would consider adding either a leveling kit, or X springs to handle the extra weight.

Hey,

I will be running an 8 ft stainless steel Sno-way with down pressure. Thanks for the info, I figure I should be already. Have you guys ever had your diesel let you down while plowing? Ive heard they are more reliable then gas. Also with the X springs, are they much heavier then the current springs?

Thanks
Jeff

this will only be my 2nd year plowing snow with a diesel and i love it(no problem pushing a full blade)(been plowing for about 20 years now)...no prblems here(knock on wood)...as for the x springs, they are just a heavier rate spring, which will help with the sag in the front end with the plow on....far as i know, they are the heaviest rated spring from Ford for our trucks....hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply ATK, your not far from me. I Just relized I have leaf springs on the front. How hard is it to convert to springs, or is it even possible?

It is possible. Fab-tech makes a coil over conversion kit. I would hate to price it tho.
