Looking at trading our Excursion in on a SuperCrew F150 since no one seems to have any money to buy it. I have found a couple of used ones but the dealer that has the one we want won't give us enough for our Excursion and the other dealer has a F150 with the small 4.6 liter engine(want the 300hp 5.4)but they will give us a good trade-in.

Tomorrow I am going to deal on a new unit. This rig will be used primarily by my wife for running around town so the mileage will be low. It will be traded in three years from now on who knows what but I don't want her to have a rig without warranty anymore(long story). What should a guy get to come out in the end? Fancy or plain? I have been looking and I can get a plain 2005 for $26,900 or a 2006 fancy one(lariat)for $35,700 and everything in-between.

When looking at the used ones the dealer didn't seem to care what the Excursion had. They wanted to know make, model, year and mileage, nothing else seemed to matter. Do you think the trade would be just as good on a plain jane one in three years as it would be on a loaded unit? We can do just fine with a plain one but if a fancy one would hold more value the fancy unit would be nice.

The plain 2004 used F150 in town is $24,000 and the fully loaded 2004 lariat is $27,000 so there is a difference in them but on our 2000 Excursion options don't seem to matter? They just seem to cringe when I say 90,000 miles.

For a 5 yr old vehicle like your EX they are going to more than likely whole sale it expecially w/ 90k on it. The auto industry smokes crack in high doses and think that you should only put 10-15k/yr on a vehicle and for used car/trucks they want the low end or even lower mileage. Compound that with people are looking for more and more efficient vehicles and the Ex doesn't have that reputation so it's a hard to move vehicle.

Once the vehicle hits 3-5 yrs old you are in the ballpark where options begin to be pretty negligable to the wholesale price but will have some impact on the price to an individual but from base to fully loaded the margin might be 1k and will dwindle as the vehicle gets older.

For what you're looking @ and since you're going to trade in a 4 yr old truck get what the wife likes better. I'd get at least XLT trim for the added insulation that is there over the XL Trim level. As far as bells & whistles like overhead displays, seat configurations, custom molded widget holders don't add anything to the resale value. When you go to sell it people look for common creature comforts like power locks & doors but not much more.

BTW I've added an image of the NADA site for the value for your ex so you can get an idea of what they are interested in and what adds value. the difference between a limited & XLT w/ leather is aprox 1k.

The bottom of the line SuperCrew is a XLT. I don't think you can get one without power windows and locks. The higher priced units come with leather, disk changer, dvd system, moon roof, running boards, fancy wheels, ext.... There are plain standard cabs still being built but not SuperCrews.

Sounds like the extra $9000 today might only be worth $1000 in three years. I think the $26,900 XLT might just be the way to go. Thanks for the input.

I have to agree on the 10-12k per year ghost story
my 02 had 65 on it and they freaked out saying it was high mileage.
my 06 which was put in service jul of this year is already over 8700 miles
i see a more realistic 18k per year.

I would love to be able to convince my wife she needs a ex.

We should keep the new F150 under 12,000 a year with our current driving habits. I put about 2400 miles on my F350 in 2005.

The wife still likes her X but we figure it is time for an upgrade with the miles. In a couple of years it will not be worth anything at all. We would go with another Excursion but the new ones that are left are way too expensive for us(40K+)and I don't want a 6.0. Most all the used ones around here are from the North slope(oil fields)so I don't want one of them.

That was months ago and you guys talked me out of it. Just dealt on a 2005 F150 Lariat today. Down to 31k from well over 40k. They have a keep it simple plan right now plus 5k in rebates on the 05'. All the cheaper 05' xlt's are gone though. Waiting to hear what they will give me on the Excursion.
