F150 = 1/2 ton
F250 = 3/4 ton
F350 = 1 ton

same applies to the other makes but I they use 1500, 2500, 3500........

Payload. A 3/4 ton is supposed to be able to carry 3/4's of a ton in the bed and still be under GVR.

Once upon a time ago..... like pre 70's
F-100= 1/2 ton as in the payload rating of the rear was 1000 lbs... or 1/2 ton
F-150 was off the wall known as a 5/8's ton... not many folks ..cept those selling them at the time called them that. Early 70's you could buy a f-100 or a f-150
around that same time there were F-200's short lived... then they boosted the # to a 250, meaning 2500 lbs rear payload.
Same went for the F-350, which in the early days was a light duty commercial truck, no pickup truck bed was available... kinda like the F-450 of recent days gone by.

In a bit of a marketing scheme, Manf. found it easier to name their trucks 3/4 ton for the 250 and 1 ton for the 350 series.

My sources for this was this mail man guy I knew named Norm.... met him at the Bar I used to frequent.

George Wendt (Norm) has done a couple Disney movies, and pretty much dropped off the face of the Earth...

John Ratzenberger (Cliff Clayvin) has done a lot of voice work for Pixar, and has his own show on the Travel Channel "Made In America" which, I'm not going to say I go out of my way to watch, but I stop and watch it when I catch it while channel surfing....

:wow wow, how did we go from talkin about the TONage of trucks to cliff clayvin?

i luv john's show "made in american," its very interesting to see what is still made in the USA.

they even make 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton trucks in the USA. well, not 100% of the truck, but a good bit of it.
