what can my truck tow?

hey all im new on here and i have some questions about my 97 f 250,supercab 7.3 l diesel,my manual says it can only tow 9,800lb,but ive heard guys say they can tow alot more,its got a 5 speed manual with overdrive,3.55 gears,and also the payload of it if you have an idea,plus its got a banks exhaust brake and exhaust,i need answers,thanks

Luke's truck is hardly stock.

The manual says that for your truck if it's 2WD the GCWR is 16K with a max trailer weight of 10.4K. For 4WD the max GCWR is 16K with a max trailer weight of 9.8K lbs.

Whatever you hook behind it The factory tow ratings are way underrated. I stay under 26K gross just to be on the safe side

i dont think manuals are good for pulling,i hooked to about 1500 pounds the other day,1-4th pulled it like it wasnt there,so i jump on the highway thinkin 5th will do the same,i couldnt get past 80,they say to just pull in 4th,but doin highway speeds i would be around 2500-3000 rpms,thats not good for your engine is it?

Manuals are the BEST for pulling IMNSHO

I do have a 6 speed, but I have grossed up to 40K (maybe 42K) and gross 36K often.

O/D is not really made for towing, just like on an auto (unless you are light or have loads of power) I rarely hit O/D when I'm towing over 7K.

BTW, why in the world would you WANT TO go "past" 80 towing ANYTHING???
