Just a heads up guys. I just spent three days working with grisoft the makers of AVG anti-virus trying to remove a bad one from my computer. It is finally gone and I don't want it back. I apparently got it by not updating my anti-virus software often enough(it had been only 8 hours since last update). It came in through msn messenger and hid quite well. The only thing it did was cause an error in the AVG program so that I could not update and blocked access to grisoft, mcafee, norton and all other anti-virus web-pages. I could go to any other page on the net. After 23 emails back and forth trying everything they could come up with they finally sent me a repair program in an email so that I could repair AVG and then update it. Once it was updated a quick scan of the computer found the little booger and locked him up in the vault. I then had to run another program to remove the remnants so that I could once again gain access to all web pages.

Moral of the story is : UPDATE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE OFTEN! A computer geek that takes care of my moms computer recommends checking for updates several times an hour. The once a day deal is not enough.

p.s. Glad to be back :sweet I was about to go through withdrawals..

I hate viruses. I keep seeing norton catching trojans all the time. I have no idea where they are coming from. system is clean on a full scan, no ad-ware, no IE hijackers. but I have been having MSN messenger on alot lately. Your making me think about it now.

I would agree. While I was wasting several hours a day for three days I was thinking that I would just like about 2 minutes with one of the worthless blankity blanks -mad

Would any of them be "Trojan horse Backdoor.Generic2.SIS" or "Trojan horse PSW.Generic.WNG". Those two were working together causing all my trouble. The files that they were hidden in are not even in my computer :dunno

In addition to the auto update and twice daily auto-deepscans, I manually check for updates around 0630 and 1600 hours each day. I don't use MSN....period. For AV I went with Norton in 1998 and am running NIS '06 with the personal firewall. I have had zero problems.

When you get a blocked virus notification, run a traceroute on it and then check the addy. Are y'all aware that Symantec bounces viruses off its customers' machines to test for vulnerabilities in their AV software? The only trojan situation I've been nailed with in the past two years was one that Symantec infected me with and they immediately hooked me to their site afterwards and sent me the toolkit to repair it.
