Vacuum Pump Pulley (Ford) F5TE-2L487-AA (96-97)

my vacuume pump bit the dust while i was driving in town and i lost my brake power booster. my petal firmed up and it took all my weight on the brakes and the e-brake to stop.

i swapped out the pump and replaced the pulley that slid on all to easy but was tight enough to turn the pump. after about 150 miles i checked the unit to find it had worked it's way off center and wobbled half the belt off the pulley system and got eaten by the fan. i removed what was left of the belt and the vacuume pulley slid right off. the old pulley is now so worn from the high rpm wobbling that it is honed out too much to be reused. it wont even turn the pump over anymore.

my question is, why would the old pulley not fit on the new vacuume shaft snug enough to work? the pulley fit fine on the old pump shaft. am i going to have the same problem with the new pulley i ordered from the dealership? any input will be taken!

thanks.

Mic the shaft on both pumps.Did you use a puller to take the pulley of the old pump?

arrowstrap,

I believe you have the WRONG pully for your year.

I think I read somewhere that there was different size SHAFTS on the pullys.

You might check into that.

I would check the difference in Part Numbers ;)

i did not use a puller, i used a prybar... do you think i damaged the wheel with the bar? it slid off nice & straight. unfortunatly i dont have the old pump as i had to exchange it as a core. i have the new pully ordered in from the dealer, supose to pick it up today... i sure hope it's gonna fit cause i'm tired of this repair already.

Seems to be going around. Just did the same thing, but used a pulley puller to pull and replace, worked great. Check and make sure part number are correct for yr. Don't know if you bought new or rebuilt, but I was advised to buy new. Total time to replace, about 45 mins. Good luck..
