Looking for some added performance out of my stock turbo charger. Does anyone have this on their truck? I wanted to know what the limit is that you can set you boost psi at. I've been looking all over the place and most say 25psi. But I've also read as much as 30psi. What is the most boost I should be pushing with basically a stock engine? I don't want to have to worry about blowing a head gasket or something, but I do know that more boost equals more power.

25 psi is about all you >safely< wana build.. for the long term health of yer turbo..but we need to know what "Basically Stock".. Really Means ?

If you have a 7.3 then the factory headgaskets will hold 40 psi on most engines. The factory turbo on the other hand is the weak spot. It is most efficient at around 25psi and should not be run much over than 30 is an absolute top end and only in short bursts, the reality is that the difference in the actual amount of air (number of molecules) is not much because you get into a range where the turbo is heating the air more than it is compressing it (and your intercooler can't compensate enough) so you are not getting much if any benefit

Thanks Big Joe and BJS. I appreciate your input on this matter. When I say 'basically stock' I mean that I haven't gone into the motor at all. Just simple additions like Hypertech Max Energy programmer, AEM filter kit, and 4" exhaust from the turbo back. I have also installed Auto-Meter pyro and boost. Looking for some additional horsepower without breaking the bank. I figured a better controlled wastegate would help. Eventually, it looks like a for sure thing to add is the Adrenaline HPOP. Sounds like a good addition. Then ,maybe some injectors. I want to keep my good fuel mileage however. My truck is an early 99 F250 4x4 six speed extended cab pick-up. Any words of advise on what other inexpensive ways there are to add some horsepower?

;tu

There are several inexpensive mods that can be done to increase Efficiency.. along with that will come Performance. I'd suggest you take a look in the DIY/WIKI section at the top of the page.. if any one of those seems of interest ? Ask Away.. there's a bunch of us here on SDD that will let You know..What We know... on how to Gitr Dun.

OBTW.. if you go with an adjustable WG actuator, yul need a releif valve... after the boost gauge T, but Before the MAP sensor.. so yer MAP (& PCM) won't see anymore than the 17-18 lbs of OEM boost.. or yul get a CEL and set a De-fuel code. (Loose Power too)

I put the TM Waste Gate controller on when I replaced my turbo and added a Wicked Wheel last winter. I have it adjusted to give me 26 psi max, according to my gauge. I wanted it low enough to not throw a code but as high as practical, given that I don't have a chip (yet). I think it's a reasonable add-on when you're pulling the turbo, but I don't know how valuable it really has been for an unchipped engine.

I like the whistle of the WW when I'm pushing it down the road:sweet, though (and of course, the boost rarely exceeds 10-15psi then)
