All of you SDD vets must know this cause from what I've been reading you-all tow something or another, but for all you that are new to SDD's trucks, X's or anything else diesel with a turbo Banks Engineering gave me a vital tip I wish to pass along seeing as I have not read it or have heard of it before.
According to Banks you should ALWAYS let your EGT's cool down to at least 400* before shutting the motor off. Reason being, the exhaust side of the turbo gets it's cooling from the circulating oil and if the it's shut down without cool down time the oil could boil and over time the bearings and turbo fry! So even if you don't have an EGT gauge let your diesel motor run at idle for about a minute before shutting down. This is what I timed mine at to reach 300 now that I have a gauge, Yours may vary. I was told 400* is good and 300* is optimal. If you cool to at least 400 your still doing better than 90 percent of the rest. So I'm told.

Probably not been mentioned here, because that's no longer true :)

With all due respect....
Junior Banks is giving out more misinformation...
even their own website disputes that :)

Oil coking is a thing of the past....
Yes, it used to happen with the old oil formulations and ball bearing turbos, but MANY sources have proven oil boil off just doesn't happen any more....

granted you could TRY to boil it off by making a full power run up a 6% grade with 20K kbs and shut it down immediately, but not many people do that :)

just my $.00000002

Nah....you ain't alone. My daddy told me to do that over a quarter century ago and I still do it. Besides, I always have stuff to sort out when I park and never shut the truck down until I'm done. Another tip from pops....don't ever sit down in a left-handed barber's chair.:sweet

My owner's manual says to idle the truck for a few minutes after heavy pulling and long times at highway speeds.

My truck cools down quick, summer temps take a bit longer but I've never waited longer than 2-3 mins after hauling. I wait until 300-350. I also know when my air filter needs changed, it takes longer to cool down when dirty.

yep me to
always have let em cool to at least 400 f
before shutdown not just for teh turbo but to also let the the rest of the engine start to stablize and cool some.
however the under hood temps will rise after shutdown due to heat soak.
if we are running highway and pull off to pee she gets set on run with no key so it cools and keeps everything pumping till get back in and go

That's good to know, thanks, but it's also cheap insurance.
I like the whole bonding issue as well:D
