Just got back from a trip to South Dakota with family and trailer. On one of the hills in SD the truck down shifted and made a terrible squeal. Back off and kept going. Happened only three other times for the hole trip. At my destination, I took the intake off to check the turbo. I can move the wheel up and down a good amount. From what I have read here, that means it's shot. BUT, it did get me back home. Nursed it along, but did well. Never let the truck do the shifting, I controlled it on the way home.

So, what is the best surgical procedure for the truck? This truck is a daily driver, does tow a fifth wheel (8000-9000lbs), and rarely, if ever, will see racing.

Can I just have the one on the truck rebuilt? My only mod to it was the WW. Should I just buy a new/rebuilt stock one? Or would the Garrett "Powermax" GTP38R Turbocharger be my best option, and the most expensive.

I do plan to chip the truck, DP-Tuner, when I can. Again, not looking for all out power, but reliable and good to great towing.

Here are the latest labs for the patient also. I sent the sample before the trip. I have the Amsoil dual remote bypass filter. Both filter were changed after the sample was taken. I was thinking of sending another sample in Oct to see if they are similar or better with a new filter. Give me your ideas.

Thanks for your diagnosis, and if you know anyone with spare organ in their hospital, please let me know. A good organ is a terrible thing to waste.

If you do alot of highway driving/towing you will most likely not like the GTP38R unless you really like noise. It's very loud even in the cab, I like noisy things but it would wear on me after a long trip.

The factory turbo's are not all that expensive to rebuild from what I've been told.

Did you check all your clamps and hoses? The orange ones are notorious for squealing at high boost levels when loose and oily.

Up and down movement is more oil clearance than wear. Excessive in and out movement is indicative of wear.

My local Diesel Injection Service will rebuild a turbo with balancing for $165. Week turn around time.

I forgot one thing...it's $165 +parts. If you totally grenade the turbo and have to get wheels, housings or shaft it can get expensive. The bearing and seal kit isn't much, around $20 I think.
