Hey everyone. Its been a while since I posted. I searched/read past post and could find exactly what I need.
I have 2000 F350 auto trans w/ 170k miles. Its a service body truck fully loaded with tools. I drove approx. 30 miles, stopped for approx 10 minutes and drove another 15 miles when all of a sudden the OD light started flashing, and trans temp was in the red at 280deg. I parked the truck and let it idle for about 5 minutes and turned it off. There was a hot smell from under the hood. 4 hours later I started truck, checked fluid(smelled different, but not the "burned" smell), wait a few minutes, no OD light, no CEL put it in gear and it was as if it were still in park or neutral, I'd give it gas and motor would rev but no moving. After idling for 10 minutes the truck actted fine when put into drive. I pulled forward to turn around and when I shifted into reverse the truck did nothing. I sat then turned off truck. Restarted and put in reverse and it was fine, put it back in Drive and it wouldn't go.
I figure the trans is shot, but does anyone have any ideas. It is 45 miles from my place and this is my work truck. I got a CAN compatible code reader but I don't think it works with my truck.
Would changing fluid possible help?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm in San Diego county if anyone knows a good trans shop.

I tend to agree...
I think the trans went south..
you have two options, it being a work truck...
AAMCO or haul it to Brian's Truck Shop...

I believe that your transmission is gone likely a failure of the torque converter which will take out the rest of the transmission when it fails due to the debris flowing through the transmission

I would suggest looking at John Woods Transmissions in Holtville John Wood Automotive - Home. I have read very good reviews on his transmission builds and since he's only about 100 miles away and has a reputation for building transmissions that will survive under tough conditions.
