shifting the lever into 1 has a different hydraulic pattern than when you put the lever in D and let the transmission choose which gear it should be in.

The delay in selecting gears is a common problem with the E4OD and 4R100 transmissions the only remedy that has any longevity is a valve body rebuild however if you can tell it has become noticeably longer than previously then you will likely need some more trans work but a valve body kit like the transgo tugger HD2 will buy you more time for an afternoon and help get more life out of the trans. And the up side is that when you go to get a rebuild you can tell them that they do not need to rebuild the valve body.

so it taking time to go from rev. to drive is the beginnings of the tranny letting go? Mine takes longer than id like...

Since its the start of the trans going what aftermarket rebuild kit is recommended I was looking at the Level 10. I use the truck to offroading and plowing my drive. Im going to install the transgo tugger hd2 to buy time. Would it be better to convert it to a 6spd.

Build a better auto. Save the 6 speed for somebody that needs it.:D

That's a call for you to make, when I sat down and did the math the stick (specifically 6 speed) was significantly more than I would pay for a BTS, John Woods, Monster box, etc. Keep in mind that you'll need a new t-case also since the 6 speed has a different output than the auto. Factor in from the start. Transmission, Flywheel, Clutch, Starter, Pedal Assembly, Transfer case & computer programming. Add more if you want the correct steering column & wiring.

Yes and no, it is part of the "normal" wear of the transmission. and at the same time a complaint from the factory about these transmissions. There is a very fine line between what is acceptable and normal to what indicates a wearing transmission. The tugger kit fixes the "factory delay" not the problems from wear which is likely the only problem you have if you've maintained your fluid over the years.

This is where I bought the hard parts for mine I had already purchased a good torque converter & the transgo kit before.

The shops that will sell you all of the parts you need & recommended upgrades are.

Suncoast converters Sun Coast Converters Diesel Transmissions, Fort Walton Beach FL
factory tech transmissions FACTORY TECH TRANSMISSIONS - Ford E4od E40d 4r100 5r110w 4r70w 4r75e 4r75w Transmission Upgrades
Racer X automotive Racer X Automotive

You'll want ATSG manuals & revision guides and honestly the FSM is helpful too.

If you want to figure out what you need then you can order everything you want from Transmission Parts & Transmission Coolers - Online!

It is effectively a requirement that you replace your trans coolers when you rebuild the transmission, most builders will not warranty a rebuild without the installation of new trans cooler.

The Racer X converter is really good. Great bang for the buck.;tu

Go with the Tugger kit. This is the upgrade for your valve body, plus the pump.
Follow the instructions in the kit. When it come time to drill the hole in the calibration plate use the smallest drills first.;tu

I would go with the transgo kit, you'll find plenty of guys on here running them and on other diesel boards too. It is a 100% valve body rebuild for around $100 instead of a few hundred for one already done.

I would actually suggest starting with not enlarging the holes in the calibration plate to start with. When/if you get to drilling holes in the calibration plate I found that the little drill bit set for my dremel tool is perfect for drilling those holes.
