Wife has her eye on a 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder. Anyone know anything about these? It would just be a drive for fun summer car as it is rear-wheel drive and convertible. Seems to be a smokin deal compared to what they book out for and it only has 23,500 miles. Fuel savings alone would about pay for it but I don't know a thing about them. Good or bad car?

i know of a few people that had them, never had any issues, FAST, very sporty. check into insurance before you jump in to buy, i think they are pricey to insure.

You can also check Kelly Blue Book

I booked it out at KBB, NADA and Edmunds. All three came up about $5,000 higher than the price I would have to pay as far as retail. The low price is what makes me wonder about how good of a car they are. Current price is probably a reflection of the current climate here. Rear wheel drive convertible is not what you would call a good rig for winter in Alaska.

Will snow chains fit on it? :D

Doubt it. It would be put out in the shop until May or June and then put away again next September. I think she is wanting something to drive during the summer as I have her F150 down at the boat ramp half the summer :D For some reason she doesn't like driving the old 95' Explorer as it is "too small" but now she wants a Spyder :dunno Women---:dizzy

I've owned nothing but Toyota's since 1989, until I bought my F-350 this past April. Never had any problems with any of them. I know a few people who had the MR2, and they loved them.
Get the VIN and check with the Toyota dealership. They should be able to run a check and see if it was serviced for any problems, regardless of where it was serviced at, so long as it was a Toyota dealership. Being an 03', I would think the previous owner would have had it serviced at the Toyota dealership.
If there isn't anything wrong, and you can get it that much cheaper than retail, you can't go wrong. If the wife doesn't like it after a while, stick it on eBay and sell for what you paid or more, depending on how long you keep it.

Hope it all works out.

:lmao:lmao

That's sounds just like something a woman would say.

For the few of theme that I have driven, there is hardly no room for my 6'1" frame.

It's a coffin on wheels for the traffic that we have down here.

I looked at the new ones right about that time for a commuter vehicle. The only thing that I have seen bad on them is that there were a few years with bad head gaskets and catalytic converters that got too hot and caught stuff on fire.

Other than that nice reliable cars if memory serves me right the engine & transmission are the same as the corolla they just flip it 180° so you still are going forward.

Mr2

After having worked for Toyota for 20 years. The MR2 is the poor man's Porsche. It's fun, fast, and great handling. As for snow chains, no way, just leave it parked until summer. Enjoy it!
