I am perplexed! I own a 1999 F350 7.3 powerstroke with 175,000 miles on it. I am the original owner of this truck. I have a thumping noise in the front drivers side of my truck when I brake. It is a transient or intermittent thumping. I have done all of the following:
-checked the ball joints; they seem fine no looseness to them
-replaced both front calipers, rotors and brakes
-replaced both front sway bar arms
-replaced both brake pad retention spring sets.

I have also greased and regreased the caliper bolts to no avail. I have had several mechanics look at it and still no help. Has anyone had a problem with this? It does not seem to affect performance, stopping, steering or otherwise, but Im sure it cannot be good.

Anything would be a help. Thank you

Well Ayarsws, Welcome to SSD.com. I think someone will be along shortley that has run into this before and will be able to shed some light on this.
Please post where you are from, and the year and everything about your truck.

I ll take a stab.
got four wheel ABS? check the sensor at the two front wheels. my wifes contour had a sensor go bad and the noise actually sounded like it was from the wheels area but it was actually the brake booster being thumped by the abs action
does your pedal pulse any at all even slightly?
when the calipers and rotors were replaced you did check for runout with a dail indicator right. maybe something is just out of round
what size tires are you running? factory wheels?

I'd throw a code scanner on the truck to see if it'll retreive any of ABS DTC's as there's around 20 codes just for the ABS system.

Thumping sound when braking

Thank you for the welcome messages gentlemen.

Powerboatr; My truck does have four wheel ABS, I am running factory size tires. When I had the calipers replaced Everything was Brand new; Rotors calipers pads and spring retainers, The mechanic I took it to is very particular about checking all of that stuff. I can feel the thumping through the brake pedal sometimes, it may be a pulse but I have never had any braking problem. The ABS sensor might explain uneven brake wear before the caliper was replaced though Huh? I will look into that and have it checked.

CHPMustang, Thank you also I will have it looked at today and let you guys know what I find. Another firefighter that I work with has the same problem with his, and I can't imagine that we are the only two 99 F350's that have ever experienced this.

Thank you

By the Ford book you eliminated the Calipers,Guide pins,Rotors and pads, only thing left is ABS.

Hopefully you'll pull a code to get to get it resolved promptly.

PS;Some time back on a 90's Chevy 3500 I had it also started to exhibit a pulsing problem with the front brakes which turned out to be ABS related which was warrantied,I think it was the ABS controller/computer at fault.

As for my occasional "clunk" somewhere beneath the driver's side floorboard upon braking....

I've had the front wheels off the ground and gone through everything with prybars and stillson wrenches, checked for ball joint, steering play, etc....checked for play everywhere and not found any or anything obviously worn or loose.

I've resolved mine as frame/cab flex or body mount movement until such time as the symptom worsens to where I can detect something else as the cause.

Good luck.
