I'm doing some preliminary research for a physics class project and found this out--when the authorities (read: Oppenheimer) in charge of the Manhattan Project were looking for sites to test the first atomic bomb, they actually considered South Padre Island as a candidate site. Spring break would be a little different if that had fired the Trinity shot there vs. the NewMexico desert...

but you know we did drop enough ordnance on vieques to probably move that island a few feet over
