Firefighters from at least four area departments battled an 18-wheeler fire on Interstate 59 near the Pleasant Valley Road overpass south of Attalla Thursday. The truck was driven by Juan Jose Lorenzo, 46, of Miami. For more photos, visit Homepage | GadsdenTimes.com | Gadsden Times | Gadsden, AL.

Firefighters, police and emergency workers spent more than five hours extinguishing a fire that engulfed an 18-wheeler that veered off Interstate 59 south of Attalla and flipped onto its side Thursday.

Attalla Fire Capt. Ron Knight said the driver, Juan Jose Lorenzo, 46, of Miami, lost control of the vehicle while traveling southbound and swerved, flipping the truck onto its passenger side.

"When he went onto the median, everything was on fire," Knight said as firefighters sprayed water on the charred metal hull of the gutted 18-wheeler.

"It jack-knifed and rolled. It was totally involved when we arrived on the scene."

The initial call came in around 6:23 p.m.

He said the truck destroyed about 40 feet of metal railing on the northbound side of the interstate when it ran onto the median.

Knight said Lorenzo and a relief driver managed to escape the vehicle and suffered no injuries.

Both men had run a safe distance away from the burning truck and were standing in the median, Knight said.

The relief driver was asleep in the back of the cab at the time of the wreck.

Knight said Lorenzo, who works for Blue Ridge Auto Transport in West Palm Beach, Fla., was transporting used cars from New York to San Antonio.

He said there were two passenger vans and four cars on the trailer, and all but one were destroyed by the fire.

There were several explosions as gas tanks ignited, and smoke could be seen as far away as downtown Gadsden.

When firefighters arrived on

the scene, they not only extinguished the fire, but also put water in the tanks of the vehicles on the truck to prevent more fuel explosions, Knight said.

The cause of the fire was still undetermined, but Knight said the truck was on fire before it left the roadway.

He said no other vehicles were involved, and there were no witnesses who saw the vehicle leave the roadway.

"Everyone we've talked to saw it after it was on fire in the median," Knight said.

Ivalee Fire, Attalla Fire and Police Departments, Reece City Fire, Rainbow City Fire and Police Departments, Steele Fire, the Alabama State Troopers and the Alabama Department of Transportation worked the scene.

....veered off Interstate.....swerved, flipping the truck onto its
passenger side.....The relief driver was asleep in the back....

the part i like the best is how it was on fire before it left the road...
but there were NO witnesses who saw it UNTIL i was already flipped
and on fire in the median !?!

having had some trailers catch on fire and burn ourselves, i can speak from experience.

there are about 3 possibilities that could have caused this accident/fire.

1. if the axles hubs on the truck or trailer were so low of grease, that the intense heat caused the axles to catch on fire (which can & does happen), and when that happens while goin 70 mph down the interstate, the fire is being fed by all the of the air/oxygen that is swirling around the fire. you are out of luck too, the fire will be so hot and if there are cars that are loaded over the axles, its only a matter of minutes before the gas tanks catch fire and start goin BOOOM, BOOOM. (ask me how we know)

2. the driver could have blown a steering or drive tire and if there is any tire/wheel, or brake debris that may have loosing up as a result of the blowout, could easliy cause the driver to loose control and cause the tanks to be punctured and blow up.

3. the driver could have fallen asleep, veered of the highway, hit a guard rail that punctured the tanks and cause the start of the fire.

its all specualation until the investigation as to what exactly happened is over.

my thoughts are, since the truck jack knifed, i would say that he blew a steering tire, and he could have gotten on the brakes real hard, causing it to do so. with that much weight involved, a driver is in for the ride of his life. i know several drivers that have blown steering tires, and they have told me that you are literally standing up while trying to hold the steering wheel straight to keep it from goin into the ditch.

driver experience could have alot to do with wether you save the rig or not. this driver may have been in training (since there was another driver in the truck) and may not have known what to expect in such a case

i agree stephen...as you say something doesnt add up....at best
id say driver experience was probably a factor....it pretty hard to
crash on an interstate...im always amazed when i see cars flipped
over or spun around on the interstate...

drivers ed aint what it used to be thats for DAMM sure !

He could have also blown a rear tire that was run flat and caught fire. I have seen that happen more than a few times. I would be interested to know how long he had been on duty, before I made a judgement.
