What is svchost.exe? It is using 50% of my CPU most the time and is about to annoy me. Between that and GoogleUpdater.exe I don't have anything left to operate :rant I think I am being overtaken....

text from Dave's link said:
svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: svchost.exe is a process registered as a backdoor vulnerability which may be installed for malicious purposes by an attacker allowing access to your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. If unaccounted for, this process should be removed immediately.

Note: svchost.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

They all look the same to me??? What is the difference? svchost.exe is svchost.exe but they say "important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated" then they say "this process should be removed immediately". I am confused

You can do the following to find out what processes or programs are running inside the svchost.exe program:

- Open a command window, I.E. run CMD.EXE
- Type: tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe" <enter>
- Scroll up or down to see what is listed.

You can also look in the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost

This key lists most of the processes that will start at bootup time. I would NOT use any web site that says "click here to scan for proper svchost programs" or something similar as there is a virus that uses the same name as svchost.exe and some that will run inside the svchost.exe program.

The svchost was just performing some updates or something like that. It is all done now and I am back in control for today anyway.

A Mac is on the list but it is way behind clutch, injectors, atv trailer, 12' flat-bottom boat and a few other things.
