This is probably a common issue for some of the fellas here. I have a 2000 CC, LB 4x4 7.3 that has about 2" of steering wheel play in it. I took it in for a look over and ended up replacing the steering gear box. I have had an alignment done and the tires were also balanced but they said everything else looked pretty tight. The truck doesn't pull or wander, it just has some play and it drives me crazy!-mad especially when I'm pulling my trailer. Any other advice from you guys? I heard about tightening the gear box a 1/4 turn at a time? but it's a brand new gear box so it's wierd to think that's the solution. I also heard about tie rod adjustment? Any help would be appreciated. :thanks

You could have worn out tie rod ends. Jack the front end up and have a friend move the steering wheel while you check for worn tie rod ends (play). Just move the wheel back and forth the amount of play you have.

also check the steering shaft from the wheel to the gear box. There is usually a rubber bushing in there to absorb road shock. Also the u joints on the steering shaft may be worn out. Many GM vehicles have these problems dont know about ford

I have never seen a worn out U Joint on a Ford Steering shaft. They seem to go on for ever.
