Went to start the truck and the starter would turn but isnt engaging the flywheel. It does seem like it is kicking out, but either the flywheel has a bad spot on it or the starter pinion is toast. It spins and gives a ringing metal on metal sound (the kind of sound that makes you not want to try it anymore)

Im going to pull it out as soon as it stops raining here on thursday but was wondering if anyone had any input, the starter felt and sounded fine up until now.

drive clutch probably took a poopie.

basically, these things are built like a glorified recoil starter on a lawnmower, and are about as durable.

I opted for the brand new starter.. long story short, it was NOT the starter.

The flexplate was broken in the center with only 2 small pieces holding it together, it wouldnt flex so it cracked and the starter was not going in far enough to catch it. The teeth on the flexplate looked good and I couldnt tell the flex plate was warped and cracked until I could turn the engine over by hand and watch it (it was out about 1 inch)
