So does biodiesel, and I've only ever see a fuel economy IMPROVEMENT, if anything, when running bio. 1-2% is not even noticeable. With the new technology, they should be able to offset any losses with even BIGGER gains. Not using internal EGR like AsSET and ACERT models used (which was really just lots of exhaust backpressure) will help.

As far as increased costs per rig, i've seen the estimates go from several hundred to twenty thousand. I don't think that it will be as much as in the previous post. The DPF system just doesn't cost that much.

So far, everything I've read shows this is much ado about nothing. Maybe a little increased cost up front (maybe a lot, who knows???) but beyond that, I guess I'm not seeing a real big problem.

Well,

I think we won't start to see the BIGGER picture untill the trucks have been running ULSD for a while as all the Engine makers are kinda guessing at this point!

I disagree. They know exactly what ULSD is going to do to existing trucks currently on the road. More or less nothing, the same as LSD did back in '93. They've been testing it for several years, now. Maybe a seal leak here or there, but for the most part, you aren't even going to know, except for your exhaust won't be so sulphurous and stinky. They add lubricity to bring it back up to the level that LSD is at now. 1% decrease in fuel economy is not even noticable. If you go 700 miles on a tank of fuel, a 1% decrease means you'll only go 693. I know my miles per tank fluctuates more than that because of ambient air temperature, forget about towing, hauling, wind, tire inflation, heavy footedness, etc. I thinkthey know EXACTLY what is going to happen, and that something is pretty much nothing....

The big mystery is how the DPF systems and the NEW technology on the 2007 trucks are going to work and hold up. That one they will need a couple years to decide... But when you consider that with the new technology, a 15 liter caterpillar will run basically as clean as a Honda Accord, then you realize that it opens up a million doors to diesel technology that were not available in anything under 8800 gross before.
