Not sure. Insulation, metals, etc. I'm sure play a part. I like 'em loud. I test drove a new Dodge, and I couldn't live with it. Sounded like a well muffled air compressor. Which, actually, it is. But to each their own. I gotta wonder if Dodge didn't drive away some potential owners with that sanitized engine.

If I wanted a quiet diesel I would have bought a Jetta. In a truck, ya gotta let the little people know whats comin'.
Plus, I like to wake all the other campers up if I pull in late, I should not be the only one awake! :drive

I hate quiet engines, gas or diesel. I want a motor that I know is running so if somebody borrows it there's no excuse if they hit the starter after it's already started. I've seen a few people try starting their vehicle because they didn't know it was running. I don't have that problem.

Whenever I get in a car I make it a habit to ALWAYS look at the rpms. Nothing sounds worse than a car started turning over again.

1) High Pressure Common Rail Injection
2) Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injectors
3) Yes

A quieter running diesel (engine noise not exhaust) is a more effecient running diesel. The fuel is being injected at the right degree of crankshaft rotation(top dead center.) Older engines have to spray fuel earlier to get combustion started and have peak cylinder pressure at TDC. HPCR engines atomize better and can inject later with better control, hence less "knocking" sounds. Make sense?

HEUI injectors are louder by nature because of the plunger being forced down by oil pressure. Also air in fuel can make a HEUI engine noisier, you need to hear a PSD with a regulated return, pre-pump and in tank mods next to a totally stock one. You'd be surprised! Also lubricity of fuel has alot to do with our squirters, biodiesel really quieted my truck down!:D My truck is quite a bit quieter than my parent's neighbor's '05 6oh at idle. Exhaust rumble and turbo whine is more noticeable now with all my mods and choice of fuel.:burnit
