I had purchased my ssd 7.3l p/s 2WD with 40K miles. Im pretty sure it was beat to hell (lots of fork lift scratches in the bed). Since I have ownd it I have treated it like a baby. So far I have done a DIY w/ filter trans fluid change at 60K, synthetic brake fluid flush at 70K, new rubber at 65K, new greese in front hubs, and synthetic oil changes every 4K. Its now at 85K old and I was wondering what else I should be changing out. (yes original pads, rotors, coolant, batterys, ect.) I only tow a car here and there, and I spent enough time looking at my glove box manuel to find that its a wast of space.

Thanks for any help-popcorn

For starters, if you have the "green" coolant and haven't checked the SCA (silicon something or other) concentration, nor replaced the coolant, that would be an idea. You are way past replacement age... Run a search on SCA for tips and why (the SCA is needed to coat metal surfaces and reduce cavitation and damage).

Diesel Injection Service sells the test strips and additive a whole lot better price than the local ford shop. I couldn't find anyone at NAPA/AZ/etc to get me the strips (http://www.dieselpage.com/motorfw16.htm) and I recall paying $16+ for my first pint of additive before I learned better. I also added the coolant filter see signature) while I was at it.

Original rotors, wow! :hail I wish I had that soft of a foot. I just replaced 2 front ones at 60k and they'd been turned more than once...

O.K. not cool. how over am I? should I put a "filter" in there, and when (as soon as I can) I am at it should I just flush in new coolant? Is the cost of a "filter" less than a new water pump?

P.S. I just put some coolant I had laying around the garage in there to top it off. the other day (it was green too), was that a mistake?

While im at it what else? (commision check came through) Rear diff? Power steering fluid?

I like the DieselSite coolant filter kit, and you could do it yourself cheaper but it was a nice clean install and worked out swell. A new water pump is pricey for sure (I had mine replaced under warranty recently which is what got me to learn about the coolant.) I was surprised at how much sand came out of the system.

Service interval data can be obtained online from myford.fordvehicles.com, if you don't have the diesel service manual in that glove box :D as you said. Here is what they say about coolant on that site:
*Note: We recommend that coolant in your vehicle be replaced with the same type of coolant used at the factory. Please look at the color of the coolant in your radiator overflow reservoir. If GREEN, replace with GREEN coolant at 45,000, 75,000, 105,00 and 135,000 miles. If GOLD, replace with GOLD coolant at 100,000 miles and every 50,000 miles thereafter. Motorcraft coolant is engineered for your Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle and filled at the factory.

So you are due for a coolant flush and replacement :sweet

Other stuff: filters of course (air and fuel).

Here's the normal service 90k checklist:
Present Service: 90,000 Miles

* Add 8 to 10 oz of VC-8 coolant additive to green engine coolant
* Change automatic transmission fluid
* Change engine oil and replace oil filter
* Check engine air filter restriction gauge, replace filter as required
* Inspect and lubricate steering linkage, ball joints, suspension, half shafts / drive shaft and u-joints
* Inspect automatic transmission fluid level (if equipped with underhood dipstick)
* Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system
* Inspect complete exhaust system and heat shields
* Inspect engine cooling system and hoses
* Inspect wheel ends for end play and noise
* Perform multi-point inspection
* Replace cabin air filter, if equipped
* Replace engine air filter
* Replace fuel filter
* Rotate tires for optimal tire life

Cheers!

coolant filter went in nicely didnt loose more than a pint of coolant.

did however run into a snag. I could not close the hood so i had to cut some ruber flange from the hood and raise the hood latch.

got a hold of one fleet gard strip for a buck and a half from a ford sterling dealer from around the industral park. I found that i was any were from 0.0 to 0.5 parts per unit!!! so i had to put in three of those pints of SCA. Ill test it in a week or so to see if I still need more.

I give the kit a B-. the mounting braket needs work and it would be nice to have the threads diped. and the instructions or the lack of needs help.

The rear diff lube was amber in color and the cover and housing was coverd in a soot that I cleaned up and put in three quarts back in with a couple cap fulls of the limited slip additive. that brought it to just under the fill hole.

That's too bad, mine fit like a glove w/no adjustments needed. Sorry to hear, what year is your rig?
