Happy new year to all! I have a 96 sd wrecker with a 5 speed. I want to make this truck more highway friendly. currently @2700 at @ 65mph. Change the whole rear, gears, gear reduction? Any suggestions would be great. also looking for a good used aftermarket air box. Thanks.

Gears first you need to determine what you have to determine where you need to go. The SD trucks had some obscenely low gears (high numbers) that were available. If memory serves me correctly anywhere from 4:10 to 6:??? the big catch is that once you get into rear ends that will carry the weight that you need with your wrecker the gears are rather low.

If you look @ the axle code on the driver's door I'll look up what the gear ratio is this evening.

for the air box you can make your own tymar style intake. all you need is the filter, band clamp, 6" section of 45° 4" exhaust pipe and its just plug & go

Welcome to the site. Have you thought about a overdrive auxiliary transmission like the ones gear vendors and others make? If you are using the truck as a wrecker then you may need the low gears from time to time and with no low range transfer case you would be fouled if you got in a bind.

guys, you gotta remember the f450SDs have the E brake on the transmission as opposed to you guys with the ebrake in the drums on the rear axle.and if i remeber correctly the SDs only had 2 rear gear options.5.13s wich were in the automatic trucks and 4.8? that were in the 5 speed and 460 trucks.

hot rodwrecker.you might be better off going over to oilburners as i told you in the email/pm i sent you. for your chassis and running gear questions as there are a few of us over there that know the inner workings of the super duty.our suspensions and some of the drivetrain is completely different from the f350,f250 and f150s.no disrespect meant to these guys over here.
