Decided to begin the on-board air project (covertly as the other half does not want me armed with black smoke AND airhorns.) Went to the junkyard for a couple air tanks and found a pair on a Freightliner. Went to the office and asked how much and he said $1.50 a gallon. Pulled them and hauled them down to the office and the guy charges me $30 for two 5 gallon tanks its just too bad that they are 10 gallon tanks!!! They are 38" long and 8" in diameter. Now I just need to make them fit under the truck

I really want to do the same thing. Can I also get a compressor that way?
I may keep it cheap and just get a tank that I can refill, a horn, and how do you switch it anyway?

actually building a tank might become a school project, since I work there and I'm good buddy's with the auto shop teacher :sweet
I've got some scrap laying around that would work perfect.

The tanks are the only thing that I have right now. I am trying not to let on that I am doing this to the better half. (until it's done and there is no turning back) The horns will be activated with the stock horn with a 3 position switch to select the stock horn or the "not so stock" horn. If I find some horns at a yard I may wait on the compressor. I'll have 20 gallons of air onboard, that should last for a little bit.

She caught me moving both batteries to the passenger side Sunday. I told her that it was for better air flow to the filter. I was drag racing the day before so she went right with it. The compressor will go in the driver side battery location.

Careful with making your own tank. If you get in a wreck and the tank explodes and causes damage, you can and will be held responsible for it.

Also make sure you psi test it after fabrication. Preferably filled with water and then pressured up. Otherwise, plain air would have to do and use caution is it has a leak and busts.

I come out with 8 gallons on the tanks.

PI x R^2 (radius squared) x H

3.141593 x 16 (4 x 4) x 38 gets you to volume in cubic inches

1910.088 (cu. in.) / 231 (convert to gallons)

So he actually got $6 extra from you. 1.5 x 8 = 12 per tank. $24 for both tanks at $1.50 per gallon.

To heck with being careful with the tanks !!!

MUCH more dangerous to be telling stories to a lady you fall asleep next to and who MAY wake up with a scissor complex :) :)

DOOOOH!! :cussing: I knew my math sucks. I have a portable Porter Cable Job Boss compressor with a 4.5 gal tank and it measured 8" x 18" So I was just kind of gussesing on the size. Either way, I got the first one mounted this weekend and it is a snug fit. It is mounted under the rear door outboard the frame. Still much cheaper than buying new.

The other half seems to be ok with the air thing for now. I told here that it would much easier to inflate the air mattress when we go camping :roflmao , I doubt it but hey it'll buy me some time.

I saw a couple other tanks but they had some nasty looking black goo/ water stuff in them so I left them.
