I'm thinking of selling my SCMT and upgrading to an SCT. However, I'm not sure of the resale value of an SCMT given the $200 Superchips charges to upgrade the device (without an original sales receipt) if the truck's PCM gets flashed. With a receipt they only charge $12.50 for shipping.

Is there a way around this that I'm not aware of? I don't know who would buy a programmer that required $200 for updating everytime the PCM gets flashed. And I wouldn't want to sell it knowing the unknowing buyer was going to get screwed shortly.

Suggestions?:dunno

:thanks

Give them your original receipt - But still it's a rip-off on Superchips behalf to charge THAT much when you shouldn't even have to send it in....

You probably won't get much for it, so be ready to bite the resale bullet :)

This must be a 6.0 thing? I have a Superchips tuner and have installed the programming in the Excursion we use to have and in my 96'. Right now it is in the shop collecting dust but it still works fine. As long as I return the rig it was installed in to stock I can then install the programming in any other 7.3 no matter on what re-flashes have been done. Is this $200 charge just for the 6.0 units?

I don't think it's specific to 6.0's. Ford has flashed my truck twice, and each time the tuner needed to get updated by Superchips, it'd only read the codes without the update. Since I had a sales receipt--original--I paid $12. Without, it would've cost $200. It's just their way of discouraging people from buying used tuners.

On edit: the tuner can be used on another 6.0 as long as I return my truck to stock. I'm assuming that any other trucks would have to be running the same flash update as me for the SCMT to work.

Has to be just for the 6.0. The tuner for the 7.3 works with all 7.3's no matter what code they have. Only time a tuner for a 7.3 would have to be sent in is if you had the computer re-flashed without first returning to stock.

Wow, I didn't realize this was a 6.0 problem. I was curious why it had to be updated if the PCM was flashed because doesn't the SCMT replace the programming? What would it matter what the stock programming was? :dunno

I'm far removed from being a 6.0 guru, but this is the first I have heard of this issue with the SCMT's? Kinda makes the SCMT useless IMHO as often as the PCM's were reflashed.

Do the 7.3's ahve the same computer controlled stuff like the PCM's on the 6.0's ?

And maybe there has not been a flash for the 7.3 whereas the newer 6.0 they're still learnin on :)

Yes, the PCM's on the 7.3 are similar to the 6's. You can use the same SCMT on ANY 7.3L from 94 thru 03. Literally, I could unload my 95 and hook up to an 03 and program it, irregardless of the PCM code.
