I have a 99 f-250, 7.3l In the mornings when its chilly (20-30 above zero) my truck has a hard time starting when it does it blows alot of white smoke out and runs rough for about 5 minutes, then everything is normal. When I get off work It seems to start easier, but it still blows alot of smoke for about 5 min. then it smooths out and runs fine.

WElcome to SDD ;tu ;tu

How about the Batteries, Good shape ? Load tested Them recently ? Connections and Cables clean ?

Ever replaced the Glow Plug Relay ? Or the Glow Plugs ? (In the 10 years you, or someone else has owned the 250)

If not.. those things would be the first things to trouble shoot.

Tell us about yer truck.. a little history ?

I bought the truck new in 99, it has about 250k on it. I did replace the relay switch, but that didnt seem to do any good. If I plug the truck in all night it will start no problem. Its a stock truck the only other problems I ever had is that I have to replace the alternater about once everey other winter. Batteries are good and everything seems tight.

I'd bet yer due for a set of Glow Plugs. (10 year old glow plugs with 250K worth of cold Alaskan starts on'em ?)

Plugging it in probably provides enough block heat to get it started.. but without [all] the glow plugs working, preheating the air in each cylinder.. until the block & heads get up to near Op temp.. it's guna run rough and make white smoke... from Unburnt fuel.

After the morning start, and being driven... the block & heads are maybe retaining enough heat to seemingly, start Okay all day?? But after an over-nite Cold Soaking ?? White Smoke & Rough Running.. all over again.
