I'm getting ready to pull my engine to replace a rusty oil pan and do head gaskets and studs.

With 265,000 miles, I'm pondering just going ahead and doing a rebuild as long as I have it out & tore down that much anyhow.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the infamous rear crank seal. There is a rather pricey special tool for installing it, but I question the cost/benefit of it.

Any comments on the tool, cheaper sources, rental sources, other ways of "skinning that cat", etc?
